Cabbages: Slavery and what else?

For our Global Economics class, we’ve been reading a book about the process of how a t-shirt is made – very interesting. It mentions the history of how slavery was used to pick cotton in the 1800s in the American South.
I don’t want to focus on the wrongs done by slavery, but I want to focus on the economic systems of dictators. In communist countries or countries under tyrants where you are not allowed to leave, and your entire work product, your labor, is taken from you, does that make you a slave to your government?
What about taxes? Since this is the government taking your labor, is this 30% slavery, depending on your income tax bracket? To what degree does consent or representation negate taxation as slavery?
